Education
"This we know: All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. Man did not weave the web
of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself." The Duwamish Chief, Sealth (Seattle)

The Friends have taken advantage of a number of opportunities to provide the public with information on the Appomattox River
watershed and its conservation. Information booths have been set up at the Farmville Heart of Virginia Festival and at other
local events. Presentations have been provided to local civic clubs. We not only concern ourselves with the watershed, we are
also interested in building awareness of how individuals can increase bird habitat.

FAR provides educational opportunities for members and the community by inviting speakers with expertise in ecology and the
environment to make presentations on a wide range of subjects applicable to our watershed. The presentations have covered
topics such as bacteria levels in the Appomattox River, gardening with native plants, and the Wild and Scenic River Program.

With the help of volunteers, the Friends have conducted several riparian restoration projects. Trees and shrubs provided by
the Department of Forestry have been planted to stabilize the floodplain along several sections of the Appomattox River and
tributaries.
